Maddalena Savary Elected To Two State Bar of Arizona Executive Councils

At this year's State Bar of Arizona Convention, Maddalena Savary was elected to the executive councils of two State Bar sections: the Religious Liberty Law Section and the Appellate Practice Section.

Both roles are a natural fit. Maddalena practices in government-interest and appellate matters, and her background spans the legislative, executive, and judicial processes. She has served on nonprofit boards, clerked for Arizona courts, and built her practice on delivering practical, constitutionally grounded solutions to hard legal questions.

Religious Liberty Law Section

The Religious Liberty Law Section exists to educate attorneys, foster discussion, share information, and — through the law — advance and protect religious liberty as a basic human and constitutional right.

The need for that work is growing. Religious liberty issues now arise routinely in both the public and private sectors, and the governing law is complex and constantly evolving. Attorneys in many fields encounter these questions — in their personal lives, in their own practices, and on behalf of clients — often without the specialized knowledge to handle them competently.

As a Member-at-Large, Maddalena will help educate State Bar members, promote religious liberty as a specialty practice among Arizona attorneys, provide a forum for discussion and debate, encourage mutual respect among belief systems, and advise the Board of Governors on these and related issues. The Section's work covers the history of religious liberty; the Establishment Clause and the Free Exercise Clause; religious exercise in schools and public venues; religious practice and conscience claims; anti-discrimination law; and other religious liberty rights recognized by the United States and Arizona Constitutions.

Appellate Practice Section

The Appellate Practice Section promotes the highest level of appellate advocacy and works to foster a fair and effective appeals process.

Through her service, Maddalena will help provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between appellate practitioners and the judiciary, recommend and support improvements to the appellate process, and review and propose rules affecting appellate practice. The Section also sponsors continuing legal education on appellate practice and advocacy, shares information with the bar and the public, cultivates candidates for the appellate bench, and works with the Board of Legal Specialization and its advisory commissions on appellate specialization.
